Saturday was Lilian’s first birthday party. I may or may not have spent a little too much time on Pinterest while planning for it. And Kristian and I may or may not have made way too much food.
If you don’t make decorative bunting for your one-year-old’s party, the Internet comes and takes your child away. Or so I’ve been told.
I read this article on nytimes.com about how Pinterest has ruined parties for the author, and how it’s really ok to have a birthday party without striped paper straws. Well suck it, internets, because I bought birch straws. So there.
(I may or may not have spent a good chunk of the party yelling at people to use the damn straws).
Unfortunately, I didn’t really take enough time to take good pictures of all my hard work.
Oh well, my nephew approved of the spread.
Kristian spent all week (and part of Saturday morning) working on the backyard. And boy oh boy did he do a good job.
Along with decorative buntings, first birthday parties require that you provide your small child with cake, so that they can destroy it in a comical fashion. I’m not such a fan of wasting an entire cake, so we got cupcakes.
Lilian was really excited for this brand new experience (this was the first time that we let her have real cake and frosting).
Sadly, I don’t think the experience was everything that she had hoped for. Or anything that she had hoped for.
(Call it a hunch).
She got maybe two bites in. And then we both needed a change. I went back to document the carnage, and I noticed that the cupcake had magically disappeared.
I figured that a small child had come along and claimed it. Close, but it was Kristian.
Lilian got a few presents. Just a few of them.
She couldn’t really figure out how to get anything open, so her cousins and a couple of other kids helped her with the pile. Although it turns out she’s really good at opening gifts when you hand just one to her when nobody is watching.
It also helps if the packaging is tasty.
It was a lot of work, and we’re probably going to spend the next month cleaning up the aftermath, but it was so totally worth it.
Especially since this little cutie had a fantastic day.
(She smiled and laughed all day, what a happy, happy little girl we have).
I think my favorite part of the whole weekend was seeing all of the friends and family who came to celebrate with us. Lilian is so very lucky to have so many wonderful people in her life who love and care about her.
