Number 24: Play Around on Some Monkey Bars

I just got back from a mini vacation to New York City and Washington, DC. I’m putting together a big post about it (I still need to import the photos from my dSLR), but here’s a little moment that I thought was pretty sweet.

While I was in New York, I spent quite a bit of time at the local playground with my sister Melissa and my niece and nephew. I figured it was the perfect time to cross number 24 off of my 30 before 30 list.

Playing on monkey bars was a bit of filler on my list, but I was also really curious to find out if I still have what it takes to hang upside down from the monkey bars.

The good news is, I’m still perfectly capable of hanging from my knees. The bad news is, I forgot to take a picture. We did, however, climb to the very top of the jungle gym/spider web. And I think that’s really saying something. And by “something” I mean, “it’s easy to conquer your fear of heights when you don’t want to be shown up by a four-year-old.”

I love going to the playground with Melissa and her family. I’m like the pied piper. Melissa turns away for a moment and then she turns back and I’m surrounded by ten children and we’re all riding the merry-go-round and laughing and going wheeeeeeeeeee.

I’m often mistaken for another mom, which is always kind of awkward. Because the other moms ask you questions about your children and you have to say you don’t have any and then it’s always a possibility that they are going to call Law and Order: SVU. And then you’ll get put in a holding cell and the other criminals will ask you what you’re in for and you’ll have to tell them that you scared a bunch of parents by playing with their children on the merry-go-round. But then you’ll add “and making a nuisance” and things will be ok.

(Alice’s Restaurant reference, for the win)!

In fact, I am fairly certain that the other moms who didn’t know my sister all thought that we were a nice, lesbian couple.

I’m ok with that.
