Mothers’ Day 2014

I joke a lot about how Kristian and I are the least romantic people that I know. I mean, by the time we get through our birthdays every year, we usually do diddly squat for our anniversary. I mean… until we got married, we didn’t actually know what day our anniversary was. The fact of the matter is, Kristian does so many little things for me all day, every day, that special days like valentines day and mothers day just don’t seem so important.

(Of course, the other fact of the matter is, I not-so-secretly loooove flowers on valentines day and breakfast in bed).

So, when mothers day comes around, I both totally understand that Kristian doesn’t need to do anything special to show how much he loves and appreciates me… and kinda hope that he’ll do something special anyways.

(Spoiler alert! He knocked it out of the park this year.)

We had one of those weekends that leaves you feeling happier, and better rested than when you finished work on Friday. And, believe you me, with a tiny toddler and coworkers who like to call me for help on Saturdays, I don’t always feel like that on Sundays.

Saturday morning was cold and rainy, so we all curled up together on the couch and watched that movie that all the kiddies are talking about… I think it’s called Frozen? Lilian thought it was pretty ok. I imagine we’ll watch it a time or two in the future.

We laid low for most of the day, but then we realized that we needed to get out of the house. So we headed out for a little shopping, and dinner at Wagamama.

Lilian likes any restaurant that gives her a special cup with a straw in it.

“Watey! Watey!”

I know it’s a total humble brag to say this, but I’m a gonna say it anyways… we ordered a kids’ meal for Lilian, but all she wanted was udon and chicken from my plate. I guess all this “serve her a kid-friendly version of whatever we’re eating” stuff is working out. And now I will straight up brag when I say that the waitress asked us if we wanted ketchup for her, and I just laughed and said, “don’t worry, she doesn’t need ketchup.”

“None of this fried chicken nonsense, give me the good stuff!”

(The waitress also told us she was impressed that Lilian never flung her plate on the floor and broke it, but I think the bar is set pretty low on that one.)

Mothers Day itself began with the requisite breakfast in bed. Kristian confirmed with me ahead of time that pancakes would be ok for my diet bet. And he had procured tulips and sausage on the sneaky the night before when he was ostensibly running to get our car during a rainstorm.

Breakfast in bed is nice, but snuggles with my little girl when she brings it in? Priceless.

(That child will normally not sit still).

While Kristian cleaned up, Lilian, Gracie, and I all went for a walk. Or, as I like to call it… one block in 30 minutes. Sometimes I get a little impatient with our lack of progress, but it sure was a nice way to enjoy the sunshine. Lilian seems to like the outdoors as well.

I insisted on a pedicure, so I got my tootsies pampered while Kristian and Lilian went to Lowes for new blinds for our bedrooms.

(Lilian might sleep fantastically these days, but I’ve been waking up with the birdies.)

Lilian fell asleep during the car ride home, woke up when Kristian tried to transfer her to her crib, and never really fell back asleep. So, we all hung out in our front yard while Kristian put summer tires on my car. Some of us were more helpful than others.

(She actually figured out how this whole “lug nut” business works, but she still lacks the requisite arm strength to truly wield a tire iron.)

I went off on a run, Kristian and Lilian went off to the grocery store. Remember that whole “no napping” business? Yeah, this happened:

I ended up cutting my run short. As in, really short. As in, only a third of the way into it short. Why? Apparently it was like 82 degrees out. Timing, sometimes I suck at it.

(Am I now a weeee bit more concerned about the half marathon I’m supposed to run in less than a month?)

(We will not be talking about this.)

Lucky for me, my spirits were greatly improved by a delicious dinner with friends on our back deck. A delicious end to a delightful day.

Did you all have a good Mothers Day?
