Sister Weekend, 2014

It seems like every time we’re supposed to get together with my family, Lilian and I find some new and/or horrible way of getting sick and have to cancel all of our plans. It had been months since I’d seen all of my sisters, so we decided to rectify this situation by meeting up on Presidents Day Weekend.

We’re a relatively far-flung family, so we split the difference and rented a house in Old Saybrook, CT. It should have been an easy drive, but Kristian and I left just a little too late and ended up getting caught in a snowstorm. As in, we were driving along on the highway and all of a sudden we’re watching cars sliding off the road left and right. There was a state trooper fishtailing right in front of us. Good times.

Even that wouldn’t have been too bad (we have snow tires and Kristian is a great driver), but Lilian woke up from her nap… in what I an only refer to as a mood. As in there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth and throwing of toys. I ended up flinging myself into the backseat in a desperate attempt to amuse her/distract her from her agony. I made faces, I gave her snacks, I invented games. But she was having none of it. I won’t go into the depths that I plumbed in my desperate attempt to make her happy.

Let’s just say that we arrived at our rental house with a soaking wet, half-naked baby. And my family was a little concerned.

“Why is your baby soaking wet? And… half-naked?”

“No comment. DON’T JUDGE ME!”

But, hey, worth it. I was just so happy to be with my family, all under one roof. We had a glorious dinner, even if I was forced to decline the ice cream afterwards (damn you, diet bet!). Lilian got to play with her cousins. I got to make fun of my sisters.

We then proceeded to have what you might call a “rough” night. As in, Lilian woke up sometime in the middle of the night and screamed and screamed and wouldn’t go back to sleep again. I think it was all the ploughs going up and down the street. Plus, she was probably a little weirded out to be sleeping in a strange location. Normally, we would have done some things to soothe her, and then put her back into her crib. She would have fussed for a bit, but eventually fallen back asleep. But we were in close quarters with nine other people, and we didn’t want to disturb them. So, we kept trying other things.

Long story short, we should have just let her fuss herself back to sleep. All we did was prolong everybody’s misery.

(You try letting your kid scream in a house full of people).

The good thing about having a rough night in a house full of people? The next morning, when you look like death warmed over, there is a high likelihood that someone will take pity on you and offer to watch your child while you go back to bed for a nap.

(My stepdad is truly a king among men).

After a nice long nap, Kristian I woke up to the sweet smells of brunch. As part of our diet bet, my sister and I agreed that we could have carb-y breakfast (pancakes, french toast, waffles, etc) once a month. I was happy that I decided that my monthly breakfast would be sister weekend!

After cleanup, Lilian was more than ready for a nap. Kristian decided to hang out with her at the house, and I went off with the rest of the family to check out the seashore. There wasn’t a beach we could walk on, but there was a little area right on the water where we had ourselves a snowball fight.

I don’t have any pictures (I was too busy having fun), but we were lucky enough to meet a local family that was sledding on a nearby hill. They were kind enough to share their sleds with us. I am now really looking forward to taking Lilian sledding when she’s a little bigger.

We headed back to the house, where Lilian was just waking up. We spent the rest of the evening having quality family time. We lit a fire in the fireplace. It was super cozy.

The weekend was over all too soon. A last little bit of family time, and then we all had to head back home. I hope that we can do this again soon. I love spending time with everyone.

We all managed to catch the same nasty cold, so I’ve spent the last week or so recuperating. Worth it.
