House for Sale: Don’t Ask About the Neighborhood

Ok, so I’m being slightly alarmist. Kristian and I have no plans to move anytime soon. But we’ve definitely been daydreaming about moving to a locale where we wouldn’t have to worry quite so much about thievery.

I can”t go into details about our break-in, because the cops and legal system are involved. Suffice it to say, it doesn’t look like we’re getting any of our stuff back anytime soon. But we might have to take a day off to go to court anyways! So, that’s fun. Also! We were under-insured when it came to my jewelery. Which is pretty much the only thing of value that they took. It probably won’t even be worth the effort to put in an insurance claim. So, yeah.

Other recent incidents that have us feeling less than fantastic about our neighborhood include someone stealing an Amazon box off of our front porch last week  and the people across the street from us having their car broken into over the weekend. The Amazon thieves made off with a small humidifier, so if I notice anyone in the neighborhood who looks particularly moist, I’m totally going to knock them over and then sit on them until they start crying. Amazon was kind enough to send us a replacement for free, and they even upgraded us to next day shipping. So, that was nice.

In the good news department, we had an alarm system installed last week. That’s helped a lot towards our piece of mind. And my in-laws were kind enough to pay for the installation. Which helps a lot towards my piece of mind in regards to our bank account. I also think that it was a really sweet gesture on their part, so that warms up my bitter little heart quite nicely. I was also able to get a replacement for my stolen digital camera. Kristian bought it just a couple of months ago, so AmEx replaced it.

All in all, we’re moving on and I’m trying not to let the whole sordid experience embitter me too badly. So far, I think I’m doing ok. Our neighbors have all been really kind and supportive about the whole thing, which makes me feel a lot better about living where we do. Given enough time, I should be able to put this whole stupid mess behind me.

  • Wow, that really sucks. I hope justice does it’s job in your theft case!

  • It sucks having that feeling that you can’t trust people. We were nearly broken into a year and a half ago while we were in the house. My wife still won’t go downstairs (basement living room) alone when I’m not in the house.

I hope you can feel normal again soon. We put up motion sensor lights around the house, and that helps, except when neighbor cats trip them at night. 🙂

  • We had outside lights with motion sensors already. But now we have an alarm system and that makes me feel much, much better.

When Kristian was out of town, I was seriously considering getting my old softball bat from my mom’s house to keep by the bed. Just in case. :p
