@#$%@$! Thieves

Nasty Little Thieves
Grrrrr.

You know it’s going to be a good day when your neighbor rings your doorbell at 8am and says “I take it you haven’t seen.”

And by good I mean bad.

And by bad I mean awful.

Nasty Little Thieves
Double Grrrrr.

Sometime between midnight and 8am on Saturday night, some jackhole or holes smashed the window of Kristian’s car. All they made off with was a 3.5 year old GPS and a 4 year old iPod Nano. The GPS is completely locked down and Garmin will call the cops on them if they try to call in and get the password reset. I can’t imagine that the iPod is worth more than a few bucks.

In other words, the thieves did more damage to our car than they’ll make selling our stuff.

I guess I should be glad that they won’t really be profiting from their crimes, but man what a waste.

I should probably be more upset, but it doesn’t seem to be bothering me. Of course, let’s see how I feel when we get the repair bill for the damage to the car door and a replacement window. The gasket is all bent and they’re going to have to take the whole door apart to get all of the glass out of it.

Mostly, all that I can think is, “Well, it’s just stuff.” And then I think about how lucky I am to have the luxury to say that it’s just stuff. We liked our GPS. We named “him” Nigel. But his maps were a couple of years out of date and buying a new set costs almost as much as a brand new unit. So, it’s not really the end of the world that we have to replace him. Kristian’s iPod lived in his glove compartment. If he wants music in the car, he can use his phone. It sucks to have our things stolen, but it’s not the end of the world.

We weren’t the only people who got hit that night. They got a few cars in the neighborhood, including the car that belongs to another couple that lives down the street. All they stole from them was a Red Sox backpack with a couple of softballs and a pair of stinky socks in it.

After we finished up talking to the cop that stopped by to take our statement, I started off on my Sunday jog. I turned the corner and what did I see? A Red Sox backpack lying by the side of the road. I didn’t bother to check for stinky socks, but I ran it back. Our neighbor was psyched! The cop that she was speaking with cheered as well. He said that he would mark it down as recovered. I wonder if it will help with his metrics?

So, yeah, thieves suck and I wish nothing but ill on them. But, all things considered, it’s not quite so awful. And that makes me kindof happy.

  1. I totally know how you feel. When I was single and living downtown, thieves broke into my car, stole my stereo and hundreds of CDs. I didn’t file a claim with my insurance because I didn’t think it was worth that much. Until I realized they also cut my heater and it never worked properly again.

  2. Bummer, Hope!

Many years ago I was a couple of hours from home at a concert in North Jersey on a very cold December night. I went out to my car and found a smashed driver side window. All they’d stolen was my rear view mirror from inside the car.

If they’d bothered to jimmy open the glove box, they would have found my wallet with a few bucks in it.

    Idiots.

My friend was friends with people who worked at the theater where the concert was held. They came out and taped my window with a plastic garbage bag.

It was still a lonnnnng, freezing cold drive home. In snow.

That sounds AWFUL! I’m so sorry. 🙁

That sounds like a miserable drive. But how nice of the concert workers to help you out.

Isn’t it funny how it stings when they do all that damage and then don’t really steal anything?

It must be my German heritage demanding efficiency. :p

  5. You’re taking it pretty well…. I would be FURIOUS!!! I have actually been in this situation myself and it really pissed me off. Makes you feel violated….

  6. Hope

Now that I know how much it’s going to cost to fix the door and replace the glass, I’m a lot angrier!
