Engaged!

Yes, it’s true. Kristian and I are getting married!

September of 2011, baby!

In honor of this auspicious occasion, I’ve made a cheesy little video. I feel like getting engaged warrants a cheesy little video. It was surprisingly difficult to make. In the five years that we’ve been together, you’d think that we would have taken more photos of the two of us. Note to self: start taking more photos of the two of us.

Engaged! from Hope Roth on Vimeo.

Kristian and I met at work. He was on his way to work in France for six months and I was his replacement. He spent two weeks training me and then… off he went. Before leaving, he left me his contact information. I had no idea that the simple act of exchanging email addresses and screen names would change my life. Forever. (Dun, dun, DUN!)

It started off small. I’d have a question for him and we’d IM for a few minutes. Then we’d just write to chat. Then we started exchanging cheesy pickup lines. Pretty soon, I realized it. I had a thing for him. And it was pretty obvious that the feeling was mutual. I wrote a song. I sent him an mp3 of it. Smart guy that he is, he realized who my song was about. We both confessed. We liked each other. I had a trip to Europe planned for October, but neither of us wanted to wait that long. So, I did what any girl would do.

I hopped a plane to Dublin, he hopped plane to Dublin and we spent Labor Day Weekend together.

Don’t worry, I told Beans where I was going.

Obviously, he didn’t hack me into little pieces and throw me in the Liffey. So, you can all rest easy. Definitely not a serial killer.

Dublin went well. (I think I knew it was love when he showed up at the airport with my favorite flowers. He didn’t know they were my favorite flowers. He just figured it out). My return trip to Europe a month later went well. Kristian moved back to Boston and we started spending all our time together. He asked me, “Do you, like, wanna be roommates or something?”

(Most romantic guy, EVAR).

We moved in together. We adopted a cat together. We bought a house together. We adopted a dog together. And now? We’re making it official. We’re going to spend the rest of our lives together. I couldn’t be happier. I really couldn’t.

From the moment I met Kristian, I knew he was something special. I don’t worry about our lives together, because I know that we’re better together than we are on our own. I trust him completely. I love him completely. I’d do anything for him and I know that he’d do the same for me.

I put the dishes away, because I know he hates that chore. He walks the dog on Saturday mornings, because he knows I like to sleep in. He buys me flowers because I had a bad day. He buys me flowers because he saw them and thought of me. I let him warm his hands on my belly, even when they’re cooler than ice cold. He helps my family with their computers. I do his Christmas shopping for him. On warm evenings, we walk the dog together and never run out of things to talk about.

Like all great partnerships, we make each other better, we make each other stronger, we make each other laugh. I think I could do anything, as long as I have him in my corner. I would climb mountains for him. In fact, we’ve hiked up several mountains together.

On a scale of one to “greatest thing that’s ever happened to me,” Kristian is about a million.

September 17, 2011. Five hundred and fifty-one days. I can’t wait.

Your story is absolutely one of the most adorable stories I’ve ever heard!! Congrats! You both sound exactly like what the term “meant to be” derived from. All the very best!
