Yet Another New Quilt

Our visit down to DC was the catalyst for me (finally!) finishing up the quilt for Jen(nie) and Damian’s wedding. It’s too bad that I didn’t visit them sooner. I was so late with their quilt, it was technically an anniversary gift at that point. Whoops.

I hope that it was worth the wait….

Jen(nie)'s Quilt

The pattern (PDF warning!) that I used is called a “Double Wedding Star.” A double wedding ring is a traditional quilt design for wedding gifts. It’s also hard as fuck to sew. Had I attempted it, it would have ended up as a golden anniversary gift. So, wedding star it is!

Jen(nie)'s Quilt

As you can see, the squares and stars form two “rings.” It’s kindof a nifty effect, although if I stare at it too long, it does have a tendency to make me go all cross-eyed.

I only have a few pictures and they’re all wrinkly, because I finished the quilt up while we were traveling down to DC. I spent the morning pinning and machine tying the quilt and machine sewing the rough edges of the binding. All that was left was to sew down the binding, a process that takes several hours. I sewed in the taxi, I sewed in the terminal, I sewed on the plane, I sewed on the shuttle bus and I (finally!) finished up while we were on the Metro. My thumb may never fully heal up from all of the times I accidentally jabbed it with a needle, but it was worth it.

The quilt came out lovely. The colors worked perfectly in Jen(nie)’s family room. I used a bamboo blend for the batting, so the quilt has a nice  heft to it and it’s super snuggly and warm. As an added bonus, the bamboo and organic cotton are both sustainable and “green.” I used a pale yellow for the backing, so it’s nice and soft. The quilt is “only” lap-sized, but it’s big enough for a couple of people to keep over their legs while snuggling up on the couch. I’d make a joke here about Jen(nie)’s size (she’s tiny), but I don’t want her to kick my ass for it later.

Now I just have to finish up (and, in most cases, start) another five quilts and I’ll be all caught up.

Is it bad to hope that nobody we know decides to get married or pregnant in the next couple of years? I could kindof use a break!
