This Grownup Business Stuff is Hard!

Well, it appears that another coworker is now expecting a child. That makes 6 pregnancies and 7 babies in the coming 6 months. I’m starting to suspect that our department has been secretly doping us with fertility drugs. I probably should have taken it easy on the free breakfast at our staff meeting this morning

In related news, Kristian is now completely in support of my desire to get a puppy. I suppose that he figures that someone small and cute for me to lavish love and attention on will distract me from all of the squishy toes and sweet-smelling baby heads that I will soon be surrounded by. And, he’s probably right. But, you see, I don’t actually want him to be in support of my puppy wish. It’s so much easier to talk about how I want a puppy and wouldn’t a puppy be great and, oh look, here are 17 adorable puppies on petfinder.com let’s imagine that we adopted them and they became my best friends than it is to actually go out and get a puppy and then worry about actually feeding, sheltering and taking care of it.

What I really need is for Kristian to say “no, we can’t get a puppy, that’s too much responsibility.” Then, I could whine and whine and whine to my heart’s content and never have to worry about pooper scooping.

This is why we now have conversations like this:

Hope: “I want a puppy”

Kristian: “So get a puppy”

Hope: “But they’re so much work. I want a puppy.”

Kristian: “So get a puppy.”

Hope: “But they cost so much money. I want a puppy.”

Kristian: “I haaaaaaate you.”

The thing is, I think that we would be great dog owners. And I do think that it’s a good thing that I’m thinking about all of the downsides and not just saying “Look! Puppy! I bet he’ll love me forever and never bark or nip and he’ll share the litter box with our cats and we’ll all be friends for ever and everything will be easy and we’ll live happily ever after the end because OMG PUPPY SO CUTE!”

Still, it is hard to be the one who says, “I’m not sure if it’s a good idea for us to get a puppy.”

Especially if you’re the one asking for a puppy in the first place!

Seth is in precisely the same phase. 🙂 well, actually he’s gone past puppy to desiring a grown-up dog that wouldn’t have *quite* so much destructive energy. but he’s still *awwww i want a dog* and i say ok, let’s go to the SPCA and then he switches to *but it’s so much responsibility* … maybe we should time-share a pet with you guys?!

even trickier when you’re not living with your honey.. if he gets a dog i’d have to always sleep there(or have the dog over to my house as well!) gah.

  2. Ha, I refuse to give in. Although, maybe if I did Allison would go into hope mode and start thinking about the responsibility aspect.
