Kristian’s First Father’s Day

You know you’ve stuck out your commitment to father’s day when your baby spends the night before waking you up every two hours and you still let your husband sleep in until (almost) 10am.

I had a four-pronged plan of attack for father’s day:

  • Let Kristian sleep in (check!)
  • Make breakfast in bed (check!)
  • Procure donuts in case breakfast in bed ends up being inedible (I am not the world’s greatest cook) (also, check!)
  • Go off with Lilian so that Kristian can have some relaxing time to himself (personally, I don’t find washing cars or cooking dinner relaxing, but apparently…. check!)

If you don’t take a picture with a stupid retro filter, it’s not actually breakfast.

We got donuts from Kane’s Donuts because they’re (apparently) world famous, they’re (definitely) delicious, because I know Kristian loves them, and because they make a maple-frosted bacon donut that I’m pretty qualifies as a father’s day present all on its own.

The eggs were pronounced “a little too runny” but otherwise tasty (it’s hard to tell from the picture, but I used a cookie cutter to cook the egg into a heart shape). And, really, you can’t go wrong with donuts. Or lattes.

Lilian’s father’s day gift to Kristian was to take a nice, long morning nap. Then, we packed up a bunch of gear and took our canoe to a local lake for a quick paddle. Results were… mixed.

“Well, at least one of us is excited.”

“I am not a fan.”

Lilian appears to enjoy being on the water, but I think she really, really, really hates her PFD. Can you blame her? She looks like Randy from a Christmas Story in that thing.

“I can’t put my arms down!”

It was a pretty quick paddle, but I think it was a good start. And I think we have some good ideas about how to (hopefully) keep the screaming to a minimum next time.

Kristian wanted some time to himself. To play video games? No. To watch TV? No. To read US Weekly? No. He wanted to clean his car, do some yard work, and cook us a nice dinner. What. A. Guy.

Srsly.

So, Lilian and I packed up a picnic, a whole lot of toys, and the rest of the donuts. And we went and watched my Dad play baseball. Bonus father’s day points. For the win.

Dad’s team lost, but they rallied at the end to keep things exciting. Plus, he hit a long bomb that almost cleared the left field fence. And I got to keep score for an inning while Lilian napped. I’d call that a success.

PS. The dinner Kristian made was delicious.
