My Mom’s a Geek

Well, this mom is a geek. Possibly a nerd. My own mom is way cooler than that.

Anyways, I was talking with another mom at a local Meetup group that I joined and she was complaining that there are all sorts of “My Dad’s a Geek” t-shirts out there, but that nobody makes a version for moms. I’ve run into this myself. You can get shirts and onesies that say “My Dad and I love the Red Sox,” but there’s no mom version. At least there wasn’t a mom version at the store I was at. Perhaps there was a mom version and folks bought all of them, but I somehow doubt it. And if there was a mom version, it was probably pink and bedazzled.

(Not that I don’t love me some pink and bedazzled, but at some point you need to stop resorting to cliche).

There is definitely no, “My Dad loves to work on the house while my Mom and I watch the Red Sox” shirt, which is too bad because I would totally buy that one.

I commiserated with my fellow geeky mom for a bit. It was while she was talking about how she practically had to go to the ends of the earth to get a “My Mom’s a Geek” shirt for her son that I realized, duh, that my Dad owns a t-shirt printing company. Which means that I don’t have to go to the ends of the earth. I just have to go to his house. And if I offer up football on our big-screen TV and snuggles with my baby, he would probably drop off said shirts at my house. It literally could not be easier, at least for me.

I guess the problem with the “My Mom’s a Geek” shirts is that not too many people bought them. I’m sure there’s a very good reason for this, probably having to do with the fact that women are socialized to underplay their own intelligence and to strive instead for physical attraction. Witness this online store. Your dad might be a geek, but let’s hope that your mom is a fox! Personally, I’d like to think that I’m half geek, half fox, half not good at fractions.

Luckily for me, I don’t need to print and sell enough shirts to justify making them. I just need to print up a few for friends, family and possibly strangers on Etsy. I also know quite a few geeky moms, which makes it easy to find a couple of folks who I know would want such a shirt.

Which brings me to this…. do any of you want a “My Mom’s a Geek” shirt? They’re going to be $10/each for a really nice American Apparel kids’ t-shirt or onesie. I’ve decided to put any profit into Lilian’s college fund. If you put in an order with me before I have them printed, you’ll get your choice of size and possibly of shirt color.

I’m going to try and sell these on Etsy. Good thing I have an adorable little model at my disposal.
