Technically, I’m on Spring Break this week. Which doesn’t really mean much when you work full time. I don’t have to go to class on Tuesday and I have some extra time to get caught up on my reading, and that’s nothing to sneeze about. But it’s definitely a far cry from lounging on the beach or even just pulling a lawn chair and a few adult beverages outside to sit for hours with my friends.
I didn’t think that being “on break” this weekend would be all that big of a deal, but it actually ended up being really nice. I didn’t have the pressure of getting specific work done for this week, so I was able to take some time for myself. Between working full-time, a class that involves a lot of reading and the fact that I need an extra hour or two of sleep every night just to have a chance of functioning properly… Well, let’s just say that I’m fairly over-stretched these days. My weekends usually consist of sleeping, a prenatal yoga class and then hours upon hours of coursework.
This weekend? I still did several hours of reading, but I also took some time to decompress and to get a few things done around the house. Hopefully, I was able to recharge to the point that I’ll be able to get myself through the rest of the semester. I knew that I needed a break, I just didn’t know how badly I needed it.
The highlights of my weekend were relatively tame, but they made a big difference in terms of my mental health. They include:
- Going to bed ridiculously early on Friday night. It’s embarrassing that this is a highlight, but such is the life of a person carrying around an adorable little parasite.
- Brunch and some hanging out with Kristian and a good friend.
- A trip to Target and a local consignment store to take care of errands that have been piling up.
- Baking up a big batch of chocolate chip cookies to bring to a party.
- Attending the annual boiled dinner that some friends throw for St. Patrick’s Day. We would have gone anyways, but I didn’t feel like I should have been at home reading. I also didn’t feel guilty about falling asleep on one of their easy chairs. Because, as we’ve well established, falling asleep early and often is kindof the way I roll these days.
- Sleeping in on Sunday and taking a guilt-free nap. Have I mentioned how much I love sleeping these days?
- Spending Sunday night curled up on the couch with Kristian, watching a movie.
For most people, this would have been an average weekend. For me? It was a little slice of heaven.
Although I work a full time job, I am neither pursuing a graduate degree or pregnant. I still napped on Saturday and Sunday.
No excuses necessary, Hope! 🙂
I never need an excuse for a nap! I almost took a second one on Sunday, but then I realized it would mean that I’d probably be up all night.
