Three Shows in Three Nights + Three Miles = ZZZZzzzzZZZZzzzzZZZZ

First things first, please all go over to my friend Vicki’s site and give her some virtual love. She’s having a crappy week.

So anyways… Since when do I have a social life?

Thursday night, my mom took me to see Suzanne Vega for my birthday. You might remember her as the singer of the song “Tom’s Diner” which has the chorus that goes “da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da” You know, that song. It’s catchy as all get out. In fact, just typing out all of those “da da da’s” I seem to have gotten it stuck in my head again.

Suzanne Vega puts on a great show. She’s an incredible talented singer and songwriter and her showmanship is just great. It was a good mix of funny commentary and letting the songs speak for themselves. The opener, Richard Julian, was surprisingly good (I’m not always so fond of openers… usually because I am too excited for the main act to enjoy them). I bought a copy of his CD during intermission. I’m liking it a lot.

Friday night, Kristian and I went to see Rilo Kiley at Avalon. I swear to God, the audience was made up of twelve-year-olds! It’s possible that they were all tweens, as it was an all-ages show. But, I’m afraid that they must all of had some excellent fake id’s, because most of them were wearing 21+ wristbands. Man, I feel old.

*Sits in the corner and cries*

*Wanders off to yell at some kids to get off of her lawn*

I take comfort in the fact that, now that the students are back, I keep getting mistaken for an undergraduate. There, I feel much better now…

Rilo Kiley puts on a damn fine show. Jenny was wearing shiny gold hot pants, which always sets a good tone. Their new album is much more pop-y, but I like it. They played a good mix of the new stuff and the old favorites, which is not always an easy feat. Shows at Avalon always end early (so they can have their euro-style dance party), so we were home at what would have been a decent bed time if I hadn’t stayed up to see the Yankees lose in 14 innings (hooray!). Someday I will get a decent night’s sleep. Just not anytime soon.

*Glances over at the clock*

*Pretends that she doesn’t have to be at work at 8am tomorrow*

Last night, Kristian and I went with my Dad to the Middle East for the release party for Brett Milano’s new book about the Boston music scene. In honor of the book, they had pretty much every single Boston artist up on stage at some point to perform. I’m about to drop a lot of names and I apologize for it, but you should look some of them up, because last night was like a best of for Boston Music over the years.

We walked in as Robin Lane and the Chartbusters were playing (Robin Lane, who Neil Young wrote the song “Cinnamon Girl” about, almost never plays out). The evening only got better and better. Willie Alexander is still damn sexy. The Nervous Ears kicked copious amounts of ass. The fact that my Dad got fairly drunk and was dancing around like a 6 year old on a pogo stick only made things more fun. He danced his way up to the front row and I believe that he got pretty much every single performer to slap him five.

There is a Borat joke in there, but it’s just too obvious. Moving along.

I would have like to have stayed until the bitter end (we missed both Andrea Gillis and they Lyres and my dad says that they were both great), but I had to be up at 6am (ack!) this morning for the Komen Race for the Cure. I ran 3.1 miles to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. I finished in 37 minutes, which is pretty impressive (for me, anyways, seeing as how I haven’t been running this past month). I raised almost 300 dollars, which is pretty impressive (considering that I only started fundraising about a week ago). But, really, I’m mostly impressed that I managed to not sleep through the whole thing.

It’s nice to get up early in the morning and run 3.1 miles. Really, it is. Even nicer? Celebrating my run with some free chocolate soy milk (hooray for free samples!) and leftovers from my bake sale (I raised almost $60 by offering tasty treats to my coworkers and then hitting them up for donations. Am evil geeeeeeenius). Running 3.1 miles burns up like 5,672 calories, right? Right? (Don’t answer that.)

So, now it is almost midnight, and I should probably think about getting some sleep. If you would like to make a donation to my fundraising efforts, you can click here. I’ll make my blog readers the same offer that I made my friends and coworkers (let’s pretend that you’re not one and the same). If you make a donation of $25, I will send you cookies. If you make a donation of $50, I will send you your choice of cupcakes or cookies. And, if you make a donation of $100, I will send you something delicious. I haven’t figured out what that something is yet, but nobody has made a donation of that amount, so it’s a moot point. Just send me an email to let me know where to send your baked goodies to and if you have any allergies.

And with that, I hit the sack. Good night!
