Not Dead (Yet)

I have not been the most active blogger this past week. Aw hell, when have I ever been the most active blogger? This time, however, I have an excuse. And, it’s a gross one.

Kristian and I have had an absolutely lovely (and by lovely, I mean totally disgusting) case of gastroenteritis. Which basically means, we’ve had it going out both ends. A lot. I was finally over my head cold and feeling pretty good. We even went to the gym on Wednesday night (a rare occurrence, even when we’re both healthy). Then, I woke up around 4am and my stomach said, “Ugh, something is just not right.”

After my third time getting up to puke, I realized that this went a wee bit past “upset stomach” and way into the territory of food poisoning/stomach flu/deadly stomach cancer. Let’s not forget that I am a worrier, okay? I fell asleep right around the time the sun came up. My decision to call in sick to work a couple of hours later was greatly justified by the fact that I had to run into the bathroom immediately after I got off the phone with my boss.

I’ll spare you the rest of the gross details, but let’s just say that things culminated in a trip to the doctor’s office (accompanied by my mom! there are some major advantages to sticking to your rut) where I was put on an IV. I can’t say that the whole experience of having a bunch of tubing stuck in your arm is an overwhelmingly pleasant one, but it was nice to finally get my tongue unstuck from the roof of my mouth.

It was really nice to have my mom there with me. It’s nice to know that, no matter how old you are, you can still derive a great deal of pleasure from having your mommy take care of you when you’re sick. My mom was a trooper, sitting in the doctor’s office for the entire 3-4 hours that we were there. She made sure that the nurses got me a blanket for while I had to lie in bed with the IV in me. We had a great conversation while we were sitting in the room waiting for the IV to finish. And she bought me (and Kristian… who realized he was sick at work that day) a big jar of applesauce, a bunch of bananas and a bottle of ginger-ale on the way home.

I won’t say that happiness is having your mom give you ginger-ale when you are sick. Because, you know, I think that most of us who don’t have Munchausen’s Syndrome would say that we are a whole lot happier when we aren’t sick to begin with. I will say, however, that if you have to be sick, it doesn’t get any better than when you have your mom there to take care of you.

Friday and the weekend is a bit of a blur. Kristian and I are still not eating anything not on the BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) diet. So, we mostly have been laying around the house playing video games. I apparently played Madden for 7 hours on Friday night (damn you wii for keeping track of how much I play with you!!). And we finally bought a copy of Elebits. I think that I had a couple of dreams last night about little critters hiding behind our tv.

Today we are going to be bold and eat some real food for breakfast. I know, I know… we’re living on the edge around here. If breakfast goes well, we might do something totally crazy like make a trip to Ikea for lingonberry jam and something to put all of our pots in. (note to law enforcement officials: please observe the “s” at the end of that word. My sauce-pots are everywhere).

So, how has your weekend been?

  1. Awww, poor Hoper and Kristian. Hope you’re holding food down and, um, in by now. Hey, will I get to meet Kristian at this year’s match?

  2. Aww sweetie that sucks! I feel so bad for you guys. FYI Dunkin Donuts makes spectacular bran muffins, for when you’re feeling well enough to leave the house. Feel better!!!

  3. Feel better you two!!! I sympathize with you both, I had a bout of food poisoning from scallops two weekends ago and almost had to call my mom and go to the hospital I was in so much pain! Being sick SUCKS!
