Please Explain This Scam to Me

I know that this is a scam of some sort, I just can’t figure out what the angle is.

Kristian and I got a business card on our windshield this morning. It looks like it is from some law enforcement agency, but it’s definitely not. Here’s the card:

Googling the phone number yielded a few sites saying “they put a card on my windshield” and nothing more. A reverse lookup on whitepages.com had zero results. I tried calling the number and all I got was a message saying “the person you are trying to reach is not available. Please leave a message with your name and number.” I tried a few extensions and it was the same for all of them.

There is clearly something sketchy going on here, but I have no idea what exactly that is. Kristian, perhaps feeling a bit alarmist, suggested that I call the police non-emergency number to let them know what was going on. So, I did and they’re going to keep an eye on our house. I’m supposed to give them a call when I get home so that they can look at the card. I feel a bit silly about all of this. But not silly enough to not call tonight.

If it was just a random card, I wouldn’t care so much. But these people are clearly trying to come off as law enforcement. Based on a few minutes of googling, SIU means “Special Investigative Unit.” Which they’re not. Very obviously so. That raises my alarm bells.

What do you think their angle is?

wondering when you’re out of town so they can rob your house

That was Kristian’s theory as well.

I bet you anything that it’s just a local bounty hunter. Unless you’re the pink panther, why would you leave a calling card. Especially BEFORE you robbed someone… If I was a robber, that just would make zero sense to me.
I don’t think you have to worry. Get some ADT stickers off ebay or one of those little garden stakes with the ADT logo on it. It’s not pretty, but that’s what I did when I was living in JP by Forest Hills.

  4. Wow, that’s a little creepy. I wonder what their angle could be?

  5. That is SUPER creepy… I’ve never heard of anything like that!!

  6. I bet it’s a scam to get new clients for a company. I’m thinking, perhaps, insurance. A woman signed the card but the agent is a different name. If not insurance, then maybe the attorneys that offer to do traffic court for you.

Did you ever find out what this was?

I got one of these cards in my mailbox today. Do you know yet what it’s about? I’m scared.
