Time to Make the Donuts! Er, Beignets

If I manage to make it back to Boston without putting on 17 pounds, it will be a fricking miracle. I haven’t consumed anything this week that wasn’t completely and utterly delicious. I think that even my toothpaste is somehow tastier.

Today, we made our way to that Mecca of fried deliciosity, Cafe Du Monde. This is where you can get beignets (French for “tasty little patties of fried, sugary diabetes”) and chicory coffee. It’s like they reached up into heaven, took a little slice of it… And then deep fried it and doused it with powdered sugar. I could eat beignets every day for the rest of my life.

Which would be in about 6-8 months once the heart disease kicked in.

But it would probably be worth it.

Who am I kidding, it would be totally worth it.

Other delicious things that I have consumed:

– Muffaletta, which is French or Italian for “I never knew that tapenade could be this good.”

– A Cochon du Lait Po Boy for which I apologize mightily to the poor pigs contained within its scrumptiousnes. Their deaths were not in vain for I enjoyed every bite of it. Besides, Kristian was the one who ordered it, so it’s all on him.

– A veggie sampler plate of all my favorite Greek foods, cooked better than I have ever tasted. The word ambrosia comes to mind, but that is just so trite.

– A salad with the mustardiest of honey-mustard dressings. Yes, I am reminiscing about a salad but it really was that good.

– Did I mention beignets?

Luckily for me, I get to continue my gastronomical fortune in just a few days, when I will be in France. The land of soft cheese and fine wine.

I can almost feel my ass getting bigger.

I LOVE beignets from Cafe du Monde. A friend and I once walked many blocks from our hotel late at night to get them. It was worth risking a mugging.

Where did you get the Cochon du Lait Po Boy? Wow, Hope. First bacon, now this. There’s no telling what depths you’ll fall to now that you’ve gone off the vegetarian wagon.

Where did you get the Greek food? I’m going to N’Awlins in September and all this sounds too delicious. Must try for myself.

Last time I was in the city we went to a little place called (I think) The Gumbo Shop for outrageously delicious red beans and rice with andouille sausage. I could salivate right here at my desk remembering the flavor.

  2. Yum! Enjoy the good food and don’t think about the calories until you get home!
PS Two days left for Photo Hunt!
