Excitement at the Roth/Sanchez House

Kristian and I were sleeping peacefully last night when we were woken by the sounds of a struggle, and multiple voices yelling, “Get down on the ground! Get down on the ground! GET DOWN ON THE GROUND!” By all indications, it was a major kerfuffle.

To say that I found this was alarming would be to put it mildly. Very mildly.

I believe that my first (admittedly groggy) thought was, “OMG, I’m going to get shot.”

So, that was a bit alarmist of me. But, in my defense, it turns out that we had what appeared to be half the police force in Malden standing in the street in front of our house. Attempting to arrest what must have been the world’s most uncooperative suspect. Ever. It took some time to find my glasses, but when I did, Kristian and I counted six police cruisers around our house. We had originally counted five, but failed momentarily to see the cruiser parked in our next door neighbors’ driveway. They all had their lights flashing. It created a rather impressive light show on our bedroom walls.

There was a guy lying cuffed, face down in the street. And a beige sedan parked right in front of our house.

You’ll be happy to know, I took the time to find my camera.

We weren’t the only people drawn to the commotion. I could see lights on all around the neighborhood (even though it was something like 1:30 in the morning) and our neighbor across the street was staring intently through the window in her front door.

They finally imagined to subdue the guy, loaded him into one of the cars and that particular cop car drove off. So now we had “only” five cop cars in front of our house.

We watched the cops search the suspect’s car. They came up with a baggie of weed, but it didn’t look like enough for criminal possession (MA recently decriminalized pot under certain amounts. The most you’d get for possession would be a fine). So, I’m left scratching my head about what in the heck happened last night. We never heard sirens, so I’m thinking sting operation? Road block? I honestly have no idea. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for news.

So, eventually the commotion died down. The sedan got towed away. The cops turned off their lights and left. Of course, my adrenaline was up at this point and I couldn’t sleep. My boss was kind enough to let me come in a little late so I could catch a few more winks. Although I’m still a little out of it and cranky.

So, yeah, hoping to never get woken up like that again.

Edited to add: Someone from the internet told me that the guy arrested in front of our house last night was a speeder with a long criminal record who decided to run from the cops.

  1. Yikes. That’s quite a bit of drama over speeding and a little weed!

Yeesh. But to be honest… I miss the city 🙁 good pics btw!

  3. Yeah, had a similar experience, it’s always a little disconcerting waking up to someone shouting ‘get down on the ground’, of course this was after they were shouted ‘get out of the car.’
