Brunchoween II: The Brunchening

A few years ago, Kristian and I threw a Halloween brunch and called it Brunchoween. I love throwing Halloween parties, but I hated competing with everyone else’s parties for guests. Brunchoween was all the fun of decorating and wearing costumes, none of the stress of worrying that nobody was going to show up. Plus: mimosas! Brunchoween was great, but then I got pregnant about 6 weeks later, so we didn’t throw another one.

This year, we decided to throw Brunchoween II. Not so much because we were worried about competing Halloween parties. More like, this way nobody had to hire a babysitter.

Our demographic? It has… changed.

(Let’s just say that, this year, my Facebook feed had a lot less slutty costumes and a lot more kids in costumes.)

About a half hour into the party, Yogurt turned to me and said, “You know, I didn’t know you were supposed to bring a baby in order to get into this party.” I let him know that a few of my college friends were on the way, and that they weren’t bringing any babies with them. Safety in numbers!

A few minutes later…

“Hey Hope! Are those your college friends? Because that sure looks like a baby.”

“Oh no, they’re not bringing any babies, lalala… l’ooohhhhhh. Yeah. That’s a baby.”

It turns out, they gave another friend and her six-month-old a ride. Whoops!

The average age might be about 20-30 years younger these days, but Brunchoween is still a hell of a lot of fun. My only regret? I only snapped a handful of pictures. And I didn’t get any of Kristian or me. Or Lilian with her hood up.

I dressed up as Dorothy, Lilian was a flying monkey, and Kristian was the yellow brick road. I was rather proud of her costume. It had felt wings and a little mini fez.

I like to call this one, “Do. Not. Want.”

The best part about Lilian’s costume? It was ridiculously easy to make, but looked like I spent a lot of time on it. Yessss.

We were going to take a picture of all the kids sitting together on the couch. But…. mimosas. Or something.

I think we need to make this a yearly event. Next year, I’ll take more pictures!

  • Nobody got a photo of Kristian? I so want to see how someone costumes as the yellow brick road! Lilian and I have something in common. I once was dressed as a flying monkey!
