Hope Roth, On Fashion’s Cutting Edge Since 1981

So, I was talking to my sister Melissa the other night about how her pregancy is going. She was telling me about her childbirth class and how they were recommending not buying a lot of toys because kids will just play with whatever is in front of them. “Yeah,” said the other mommies-to-be, “like keys and cell phones.” “Totally,” said my sister, “like how my little sister used to wear a cookie box on her head all the time.”

Ha! You heard me right.

I used to wear a cookie box on my head. And I made it look damn good. Nobody rocked the cookie box like me. Nobody.

It was orginally just used to wrap a teddy bear that my uncle gave me (our family motto: “Don’t Bother With Wrapping Paper When any Ol’ Household Item Will Do”). But, apparently I said “Fuck the bear! Give me the Cookie Box!” Except, I probably didn’t say those exact words. I didn’t really start swearing like a sailor until the age of about 13 or so.

My sister told her class that I wore my awesome cookie hat for about 2 years straight. Then, on the phone with me she copped to exaggerating just a wee bit. It’s what we do in this family (our other family moto: “Never Let the Truth Get in the Way of a Good Story”). So I don’t know exactly my Cookie Box Hattery Phase lasted, but it was for some time. I mean, isn’t that what all of the fashion experts say? Find the look that works for you and stick with it.

Somewhere there are pictures of me showing off my forward fashion thinking. I wish that I knew where those photos were. I would totally scan them and put them up for your viewing pleasure. Some inspiration, if you will. Plus, then I could put up more of the totally embarrassing photos that I have of my dad from when he was little and not feel so guilty. But, alas, I can’t seem to find the photos right now.

So, instead, I present you with a retro look, updated for the Naughty Aughties.
