Thesis Time!

I met with my advisor today to talk about my thesis and to take care of some paperwork. It was a great meeting – he told me that the research paper that I did for him this Summer was one of the best written and researched that he’s seen. I sent him the final version a few weeks before Lilian was born and I never heard back from him, so it was nice to know that I did a good job. My paper was on JFK and the civil rights movement. I utilized the online archives at the JFK Library for most of it. It’s a testament to their digitizing project that I was able to find such rich source material.

We filled out all of the paperwork to register me for my thesis. I’m done with all other course work, so this is the last step for me. It’s a crazy feeling… I’ve been working towards my master’s degree for several years now and the end is really in sight. I just have to write the darn thing!

Next step? Finding two more professors to sit on my committee and polishing up my proposal to give to my advisor. Then I’ll start my research. My first chapter is due at the end of December, so I don’t have time to dilly-dally. I’ll have to figure out a good system for getting research done while taking care of Miss Lilian. I anticipate a lot of work on weekends when Kristian is around. And I’ll probably read her more than a few primary sources out loud. My Dad and his GF will be doing Friday childcare when I go back to work, so they might start a little bit early to get her used to hanging out with them. I’ll probably use that time to do some research as well. And to nap. I still intend to use my time for napping.

A family friend gave me some good advice in terms of getting my work done and not neglecting my baby. She recommended taking copious amounts of notes. Mommy brain really does exist. Apparently our brains don’t function well on two hours of sleep here and there. It makes me… not think so good.

Wish me luck!
