The Final Countdown

It’s less than a week until our wedding and I am surprisingly calm. Which makes me think that I must have forgotten something. Which makes me all anxious. Which I find oddly soothing.

(I never claimed to not be a crazy person).

I laughed at myself during the whole planning process, because I’m such an over-planner that it borders on the ridiculous. I have several to-do lists. As in multiple. As in more than one. As in, I feel the need to organize my to-do lists by type of activity. It’s not quite organizing my closet by color or ironing my underwear, but it’s up there.

The planning process has definitely brought out the Type A part of my personality. I attack my to-do lists like they owe me money. My close friends and family are probably getting tired of all of my detailed emails. I even bought a bunch of cute shopping bags in Chinatown and I’ve been organizing our packing by usage. There’s a ceremony bag, a reception bag, a craft supplies bag, etc. At least there isn’t a cleaning supplies bag.

(Yet).

Strangely enough, planning a wedding has also forced me to let go of things. There’s no way that you can plan a wedding by yourself and not go completely and utterly insane (or, in my case, more insane). It’s just not possible. So, I’ve been delegating. And then letting go. And then resisting the urge to check up on people. Because that would pretty much defeat the purpose of delegating and then letting go.

So far, the people in my life has come up big. You always hear about wedding bringing out the worst in people, but it can bring out the best in them as well. And my friends and family have been amazing. From my Mom and Step-Dad planning out every meal this weekend to my sister Allison putting together a spa trip on Friday, they’ve taken care of everything I’ve asked them to and even things that I never even thought to ask for.

(Like a spa trip).

(Which, hells yeah).

At this point, I’ve taken care of all of the necessities. It will be a legal marriage, there will be food for everyone to eat and we will all have chairs to sit on. Everything left is “would be nice to have.” Ok, so we still need to have programs printed, but I don’t think that those are absolute necessities. I mean, it’s not like anyone is going to forget whose wedding they’re attending. Or get up and leave because they don’t know the name of the ring bearer.

I went and got my eyes checked today (bear with me, this is tangentially related to the wedding). Apparently, I am super tech-y in all areas of my life but my eye care. I’ve been wearing the contact lenses of a luddite. Plastic is so 2002. Silicon is the new hotness. The optometrist told me that my sexy new contact lenses will breathe much better, resulting in eyes that are less red. He said it would be like getting my teeth bleached.

I didn’t have “bleach eyeballs” on a to-do list anywhere, but you can bet your bottom dollar that I’m going to be checking it off somewhere.

As soon as I can figure out the best way to characterize it.
