Ho Hum. Nothing to see here people. Move along.

Sorry I haven’t written anything in a while. I guess that not much interesting has happened to me lately. And, even though I just know that all y’all would just looooooove to hear about what I had for breakfast yesterday (corn muffin from dunkin donuts, it was pretty meh). Well, I just can’t bring myself to be the type of person who blogs about what she had for breakfast. Unless it was something interesting, like a human heart. Then I’d be all over that shit.

I guess I can talk about volunteering last night. At least that makes me look all philanthropic and helpful even if I do end up boring.

So, I used to work for a Boys and Girls Club. I quit when I realized that they weren’t paying me enough to keep all of the computers in the building running and teach the kids. Non-profits never pay enough for the work that most of their employees end up doing. So it wasn’t really the biggest surprise in the world when I started getting burnt out. so, I hightailed it out of there, got a job at a University (more $$$ + less work = one very happy Hope) and ran away laughing into the sunset.

Except I missed the kids.

Which I knew was going to happen.

Which is why I said that I would come back as a volunteer.

Yes, I know that this kindof makes me a little bit insane.

Anyways, I show up every now and then (I try to make it more often, but damn the man I just keep getting shows on nights that I’m supposed to volunteer). The reactions from the kids tend to vary from “Oh yay Hope I missed you!” all the way down to “Why the fuck did you come back?.” I tend to like working with the kids from that first group better. 😛

For the most part, we have a lot of fun. It’s really nice to be able to continue helping out. I think that it’s so important that people like me, who have computer skills, help out to bridge the digital divide. You need a computer for practically everything these days and a lot of these kids barely even know how to use a mouse. So, I really do think that it’s important to help them out with that. Sometimes it’s hard, like when I see kids breaking the rules and they tell me “shut up Hope, you don’t work here anymore.” But, for the most part, I’ve really enjoyed going back and working with the kids in the less stressful position of volunteer. Plus, I still fix a lot of the computers. And try to get donations from work to help replace their outdated crap.

Speaking of donations, I think that I’ve decided to do the Susan J. Komen Breast Cancer Walk. I’ll let you know when it’s official. Then you can all feel free to donate some of your hard earned cash. 😛

  1. Some people like blogging about food you know ;-). Let’s see some photos of Tabitha – I think you’re long overdue for some cat-blogging :-P.

  2. Oh yes, Hope, I know all about working for nonprofits for little money! Good for you moving to the University, but also going back to help the kids.
