If I wanted to be lazy, I would just tell you to do all of your holiday shopping for that special geek in your life at Think Geek. You pretty much can’t go wrong with anything you buy there (unless you attempt to buy one of their April Fools’ Day products). But, that seems like a bit of a cop-out. So, here are a few suggestions.
For the practical person in your life who keeps a lot of data on their computer:
A Mozy Home Unlimited Account. For $54.45, you can make sure that special someone doesn’t lose all of their photos if their computer dies. Don’t give this to anyone who would get mad at you if you bought them a road hazard kit or a vacuum cleaner.
For that special someone who loves cats and hates correct grammar:
LOLCats Fridge magnets. Now everyone on your refrigerator can haz cheeseburger. I bought these for Kristian a couple of years ago and they were a huge hit. We still have them in our kitchen and our guests love captioning any and all photos that we have up.
For the little gamer in your life:
LEGO Harry Potter. Full disclosure time – I haven’t actually played this game. But, based on the description and the fact that I got completely sucked into LEGO Star Wars, I sure as heck want to play it. (Also? That’s an Amazon Associate’s Link). Yes, this means that I like playing video games designed for small children. No, I’m not embarrassed at all about this. Yes, I’m terrible at all “grownup” games. LEGO + Harry Potter + Using the Wii controller as a wand = DO WANT.
For someone whose lunch gets stolen from the communal fridge:
Atomic Food Containers. I bought a set of these for Kristian the same year I bought the LOLCat Magnets and they’re still going strong. They never fail to get a laugh. And the containers themselves are quite nice.
For the geek who always gets roped into family text support:
No I Will Not Fix Your Computer T-shirt. Nothing says “Christmas Miracle” like the family getting together to say that they’ll stop calling you up for free tech support. Say it with a T-Shirt.
For fans of wacky British humor:
The IT Crowd on DVD.The IT Crowd has some of the cheesiest jokes ever. And yet? It never fails to make me double over with laughter.
For the germaphobe you really want to fuck with:
Giant Plush Microbes. Nothing says love like a puddle of herpes. Or Swine Flu H1N1. Who doesn’t want to answer the question “What did you get for Christmas?” with, “MRSA, Ebola and the Plague.” Answer: definitely not me.
If you have me as your secret Santa:
Come to the Dark Side: We Have Cookies Apron. One of my favorite phrases of all time. And the accompanying picture is just hilarious.
For that special someone who loves to read:
A Kinde or a Nook. I like the Kindle, because I buy most of my books from Amazon. My sister likes the Nook because you can read Google Books and library books on it. You could always go for the gusto and purchase an iPad.
Do you have any geeky Christmas questions? Leave them for me in the comments!
If anyone ever gave me LOL Cat magnets, I would immediately disown them. I hate those damn LOL Cats!!
I will try to remember not to send you any! 😉
I got LOLCats magnets for my birthday and people that came over kept wondering what the hell was on my fridge (our friends aren’t as geeky/cool as us).
I <3 the IT Crowd, and I'm a huge fan of my nook. I thought I would hate e-readers, but I love that thing. Portable, tons of books at my fingertips, quick downloads! I can buy books at 2am!
Most people don’t get the magnets at first, either, but then we explain and they get into them.
Haha, cats are so funny. Great list!
