Emotional Feeding

Inspired by my friend Jennie (I may call her Jennie, you must call her Jenn), I started counting calories again. We both signed up for the new Calorie Count Plus site to keep track of what we’re eating and to help keep each other motivated. One of the new features is a quiz to tell you what your diet profile is. I took the quiz and, apparently, I am an emotional eater.

I hadn’t thought about it that way. In my mind, stress + food = do not want! When I am stressed out or anxious, I want to stay as far away from food as possible. But, then I thought about it some more and I realized that when I’m feeling generally blah or blue, I do tend to crave sweets. Some candy here, a piece of chocolate there, it all adds up.

Another thing I realized is that I am an emotional feeder. By that I mean that my first inclination when someone isn’t doing well is to offer them food. It’s like I was an Italian grandmother in a past life. My Dad is going through a rough patch right now and we showed up at his place last night with sushi, popcorn, apple cider and grapefruit spritzer. We probably would have showed up with some chocolate and cookies as well, if Kristian hadn’t looked at me like I was insane after I put the spritzer in our cart.

So, if you’re sad, let me know and I will send you cookies. :p

  1. I do the same thing — when other people are doing badly, I never really know what to do, so I just start baking. That is actually how I got to be good at baking, and how I got into the habit of baking.

Sometimes I am an emotional eater, too, but I find it helps if I get myself to make comfort foods from scratch instead of buying them. That makes me get off my emo butt and use up a little energy, and I get to feel accomplished when I’m done, which does wonders for my mood.

  2. (oh, and your first link up there seems to need a closing quotation mark…)

  3. That says I am an Excessive Eater, which pretty accurately describes me. I have a tendency to stuff myself for no good reason at all, and make really bad food choices. Like bacon cheeseburgers.

It’s interesting to see your eating style spelled out like that. I know I tend to be in complete denial about my eating habits. I keep saying I’m not a sweets person, but if someone brings cupcakes to work I’ll probably eat about 3. Now that I recognize it, I just have to change it!

  4. Oh, and I’m tagging you for 7 Random Things. For when times get desperate during NaBloPoMo!

  5. Yes after taking that quiz I also fit into the emotional eater category. Pretty much nailed me on the head. When I’m stressed, I eat. When I’m mad, I eat. And when I’m sad, I eat. Ben and Jerry’s Cherry Garcia is a really good friend of mine.

  6. And thanks sweetie! You really need to take the credit though for inspiring me to join! This way we can kick each other in the butt…I mean motivate each other to eat healthy! Love ya!

  7. Hope

This is the most number of comments I’ve ever had! Keep the double comments going guys! :p
