Happy Evacuation Day!
What is Evacuation Day, you might ask? Well, it is the day that the British “evacuated” from Boston. And it just so conveniently happens to fall on Saint Patrick’s Day. Every year. It is “celebrated” in Boston, Somerville and Cambridge. And nowhere else.
So, yeah, basically it’s an excuse to give a bunch of schoolkids and city employees the day off on Saint Patrick’s Day. The saddest thing about moving from public to private schools (oh the horrors of a top-rate education) is that I no longer got the day off on Evacuation Day. Most of my friends had never even heard of this wondrous holiday. That’s what you get for growing up in Newton, I suppose.
How did I spend my Evacuation Day? Sprawled out on the couch, staring off into space and attempting to forget that I was in hour 32 of headache watch.
Aren’t the headaches supposed to come after Saint Patrick’s Day? Shouldn’t I be calling in sick tomorrow?
Anyways, I hope that you all had a lovely day full of Shamrock Shakes and green beer. We had a delicious boiled dinner, so I am certainly not complaining.
Anymore.
For now.
