Why? Because I think that it would be really fun to sing Journey songs in public for an appreciative audience. No, really, I mean it. I like Journey. There, I said it. You music snobs can drink your alternative flavored hateorade all you want, I loves me some Journey.

Apparently “Don’t Stop Believing” is the most downloaded song of all time from the iTunes music store. So, clearly, I am in a lot of company with my Journey love. The quality of that company is perhaps debatable, but there are definitely a lot of us. Safety in numbers and whatnot.

Which brings me back to the band that I tried out for. They seem like nice guys and their setlist is a lot of fun to sing. I intentionally chose difficult songs for my audition because I was hoping to show that I have some chops. It made today a little stressful (Hope to self: why in the bloody hell did you decide to sing “Living on a Prayer?” You know that last chorus where it goes up a key is absolutely inhuman). But, hey, I managed to belt out all four songs without showing off my Bobby Brady impression. And that’s success in my book. Actually, I believe that the feedback that I got was “Well, you can sing,” so I think that means that I definitely didn’t shatter any windows or eardrums.

I’m glad that I challenged myself, because apparently there were a lot of other people who tried out and none of them sucked. Apparently terrible singers like to stand in line for American Idol but they don’t respond to ads on Craigslist. The guys sounded almost let down that everyone was so talented, so I cheered them up with my best William Hung impression. I don’t know if that will win me points or lose me points, but if they don’t like lame jokes about reality show washouts, I don’t want to hang out with them anyways. So there.

I also told a lot of drummer jokes. The drummer laughed, so I think I’m ok.

But drummers almost always laugh. It’s a natural response when you can’t understand what’s going on.

I kid! I kid!

I’m trying not to get my hopes up. I don’t deal well with rejection, so I like to plant the seeds of self-doubt early enough that it eventually seems like it was inevitable. It would be nice to play out more (You can only play so many gigs as a solo performer before you’re left with your mom and two friends in the audience. And then your mom has other plans). And I think that it will be good for me to have challenging songs to sing. Plus, as I previously mentioned, I loves me some Journey.

And if it helped me to make a little money on the side, I wouldn’t complain. Not one bit.

But, I’m not getting my hopes up.

I’ll let y’all know how it goes.

Ok, admit it. You have music that you listen to that is a total guilty pleasure.
