What a copout.

Kristian and I went to see Al Janik and the Plastic Cheese Band on Saturday night at the Abbey Lounge. It was their annual St. Stanislaw’s Day show. Ok, so St. Stanislaw’s Day was technically May 8th (Wikipedia knows all). But, really, I feel like St. Stanislaw’s Day is really just a state of mind…

The opening band, Paved Country was great. Beautiful voices, lovely harmonies. I found a copy of their CD which someone had left in the bar’s bathroom. I think that it was more a case of a drunk person forgetting something in a bathroom stall and not a commentary on the music, because I’ve been listening to it and it sounds great. Karma will probably bite me in the ass, My Name is Earl Style, but I saw a cd sitting on the toilet paper dispenser and I took it. People were drinking Polish beer, it was just a matter of time before it ended up in the toilet. I saved that CD from a watery grave people.

So, yeah, Al was in rare form Saturday night. Never before have I heard such fantastic Polka Music. And I’m not just saying that because he gave us drink tickets. Although it’s true that nothing gets you in the polka mood like a nice cold Zywiec. We got to hear the Pennsylvania Polka (a song that you might remember hearing in Groundhog Day). Al asked the age old question, “What is the Polish Word for Polka?” (answer: polka). We were even treated to a solo on one of those kiddie xylophones (which was duct taped onto Al’s hat). All in all, it was a not bad way to spend a Saturday night. In fact, I would go so far as to say that it was great way to spend a Saturday night.

I will be spending next Saturday night packing for The Big Move. I am in the process of putting all my stuff into boxes. It is the very definition of Not Fun. I own too many shoes. Also, a lot of dishes. And I bought more shoes this weekend. I also bought new dishes (well, margarita glasses… because they were onsale and because heaven forbid any of our future guests should have to drink margaritas out of non-standard glasses. I shudder at the consequences). I am really and truly insane.

So, how did you pay homage to Saint Stanislaw this year?
