At dinner the other night, my Mom informed me that she’s learned that the best way to keep up to date with my goings on is to read my blog. I don’t know what makes me feel guiltier, the fact that my Mom has to read my blog to keep herself up to date or the fact that I don’t keep my blog as up to date as I should. I asked my Mom if she was going to start complaining that I didn’t call her enough or if she was going to complain that I don’t blog enough. She said neither, because, she’s cool like that (note to self: call Mom more).
Talking about my blog started up a whole conversation about the internet and modern media. It turns out my Mom has become quite the internet junkie. Not only does she read all sorts of political blogs and their associated comments, she’s also been learning about all sorts of alternative media. She referenced the SNL Sarah Palin sketches and then proudly informed me that she knows all about Twitter. Kristian and I furthered her internet education by introducing her to LOL Cats and Rick Rolling.Â
I also warned her to stay the hell away from anything that mentions goatse, tub girl and two girls with one cup. I’m a good daughter.
(All of you who have no idea what I’m talking about, please please please resist the temptation to put any of those words into google).
(Seriously, I can’t be held responsibly for any retinal damage should you fail to heed my warning).

My Mom also has a blog, but she needs to update it more. A lot more (you hear that Mom! this whole guilt thing goes both ways! muahahaha). She doesn’t allow comments, however, because she knows what trolls are. Still, you should all check out her blog. You can leave your nice comments here. Because now I know that she will be reading. Don’t bother with your mean comments. Because I will be deleting them. Let’s all show my Mom that people on the internet can be nice!
My mom never used a computer until about 2 years ago when my husband and I were looking for a house. My dad set her up with a laptop, and while she was out scouring MLS listings for us daily, she discovered forums and blogs. Before I knew it, she had about 50 blogs she read regularly. We didn’t really find out how into the internet she was until we had to travel to Ohio for my grandpa’s funeral. We’re driving down the interstate and some truck makes a shady move, and my mom yells “WTF?” (as in dubya tee eff). I laughed so hard I cried.
Also, warn her about the lemon party, and anything (other than lolcats) from 4chan. Other than that, good list!
