This was a bittersweet holiday for me. It was our first Christmas with Lilian. But it was also our first Christmas without my Grandfather. Grandpa loved Christmas, and he and my Grandmother always made it special for us. He especially loved Christmas lights.
We took Lilian to see a local house that does a crazy lights display, and I was definitely thinking about how much my Grandfather would have loved it.
(Although even he might have said that it was over the top).
I was talking to my Grandmother about Christmas and about Grandpa, and she told me about how much she thought about him when my cousin was putting up her Christmas tree. She bought new lights this year, and she realized after they were up that she should have gone with colored instead of clear. Grandpa loved colored lights.
So, my cousin replaced one of the bulbs at the top of the tree with a blue one – Grandpa’s favorite color. And that was Grandpa’s bulb.
I decided to do the same thing with our tree. The only colored bulb I could find was purple, so we went with that.
Grandpa always made the holidays magical for us. I hope that I can provide a little bit of that same magic for Lilian.
Merry Christmas, Grandpa. I love you.
